The City of Dover, incorporated in 1829, contains 23.7 square miles and is home to approximately 39,000 residents. Dover is the state capital of Delaware, and the County seat of Kent County. Dover is a diverse City, and the community regards its diversity as a core strength. The 2019 American Community Survey showed the City population as 45.8% African-American, 44.3% White, and 7.5% Hispanic. Dover is located in central Delaware, and sits within 90 miles of Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Baltimore. The Atlantic beaches are within an hour of Dover. Dover is home to the Dover Air Force Base. The Base is home to the C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. Its Eagle Wing flies hundreds of missions throughout the world and provides 25% of the Nation’s strategic airlift capability. Dover AFB operates the largest and busiest air freight terminal in the Department of Defense, and is also home to the Air Mobility Command Museum, which welcomes thousands of visitors annually. The people at Dover AFB are actively involved in a variety of off-base activities, and a strong base-community program provides a forum and a spirit for military and civilian cooperation at all levels. Dover is also home to Delaware State University, Delaware Technical and Community College, Wesley College, and Wilmington University.
