About Civic Garden Center

The CGC is a regionally recognized nonprofit model that has been teaching people how to grow food and care for the environment since 1942. We’re situated in Hauck Botanic Garden, an eight-acre gem of an urban oasis set on the former estate of philanthropist Cornelius J. Hauck. Our mission is to build community through gardening, education and environmental stewardship. The CGC is Cincinnati’s go-to resource for all things gardening, conservation and horticulture and the first stop for community members to learn about the many ways to tend the work around them. We offer classes, trainings, tours and more for people of all ages. Our volunteer teams work on our grounds, in community gardens, with students and in greenspaces around Cincinnati to make our work possible. And we hold two annual plant festivals: GrowFest (the first Saturday in May) and the Fall Native Plant Festival (the first Saturday after Labor Day in September). The Civic Garden Center was founded by two women during World War II as a resource for individuals to consult about Victory Gardens. In the 1980s, we started one of the first community gardens programs in the nation, and in 2010, we began converting an old gas station into a LEED Platinum Certified learning facility. In 2022, we celebrated 80 years as a resource and—as the Cincinnati Enquirer wrote of the CGC in 1944—“a civic asset of importance.” We’ll keep showing up to create and strengthen community around urban agriculture, conservation and the need to live more sustainably together.
