About Civil Air Patrol - Vermont Wing
The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a congressional chartered, federally supported, non-profit corporation that serves as the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force (USAF). CAP has some 57,000 volunteer senior and cadet members in over 1,600 local units in all fifty states and Puerto Rico, broken out into regions and "wings". The Vermont "Wing" of CAP consists of a headquarters in South Burlington and six squadrons located throughout the Green Mountain State. CAP's prime mandate is Emergency Services which can be employed by the USAF, and for various government and disaster relief agencies. To provide this service, Vermont Wing has single engine aircraft, vehicles, a comprehensive radio network, direction finding, and various equipment, along with volunteer pilots, officers, and cadets who are ready to serve Vermont and nationally if needed. Our services include: - Search and Rescue (from air and ground including a K9 unit via partnership with Killington Mountain Rescue. - Real-time video and photography assessment (air and ground). - Transport and aerial viewing for officials. - Homeland security. - Target for fighter and radar intercept training. Missions have ranged from missing persons and aircraft, support for Vermont Yankee Nuclear, the Vermont Air National Guard, Coast Guard, and State Police. Vermont CAP even provided aerial traffic surveillance for a Phish concert! CAP was created on December 1, 1941 as a way to use America's civilian aviation resources to aid the war effort instead of grounding them. The organization assumed many missions including anti-submarine patrol and warfare, border patrols, and courier services. After the end of World War II, CAP became the civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force and adapted three congressionally-mandated missions: Emergency Services, Aerospace Education and Cadet Programs.
