Cloomi is a WhatsApp chatbot that anonymously connects Zimbabweans - home and abroad - with health service providers (pharmacies, medical laboratories, and diagnostic imaging centres) in their chosen location, so they can check availability & compare prices. Talking to the bot like they are chatting to one of their friends, a user selects the category of providers they want, enters a city or area, and finally the product or service they're looking for. They can specify what they're looking for in plain text form, like "paracetamol", or they can attach a picture, i.e a prescription or product bottle/packaging. When attaching a prescription we ask the user to obscure any personal details, which is pretty easy to do with WhatsApp. This request is then instantly sent to all the subscribed service providers that match the user search. Using the same bot service providers are able to download and process customer requests. A service provider is only told that a customer in their locality is looking for xyz, without knowing the identity of the customer. They can respond YES, NO, or NOT RELEVANT. If YES, they're also able to add additional details like price, or ask the user for a prescription, or the strength of the medication. This confirmation is immediately sent to the customer via the bot. At this point the customer can see the business physical address, the location map (if available) and, crucially, the business' WhatsApp number. The customer, and only the customer, decides whether or not to engage with said business, based on, among other things, price and/or location. They can WhatsApp-chat the business, call, or walk/drive to the premises. Once they have made up their minds about who to buy from, the customer can stop receiving further messages by just tapping a button. The customer is indeed in complete control of the process.
