About Community Emergency Radio Association
CERA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit consisting of an all-volunteer group of concerned citizens dedicated to promoting community safety throughout El Dorado County and surrounding communities. We are the Executive Board and fundraising/grant application arm for the El Dorado County Neighborhood Radio Watch and the El Dorado County Amateur Radio Club. Our Neighborhood Radio Watch program is growing fast, currently with over 500 members. It was formed in 2019, following the Camp Fire that destroyed the town of Paradise, California. Our founder, and Public Information Officer, Alan Thompson, was involved in restoring the internet to the region affected by the fire and it changed his life. What he found, while working there, was virtually all communication - internet, cellular, landline, etc. - failed in the fire and directly or indirectly resulted in many lost lives. Following the fire, Alan suggested we form an organization using a hardened radio system that would survive fires, snow storms, etc. He used the motto: "Radio for the Rest of Us", meaning radios that anyone can use, not in any way related to amateur radio. The result is a 2-way radio communication system we built in El Dorado County that alerts our radio users of a fire or other emergency in their area. All of CERA’s radio infrastructure, programs, and services are free to the public. We rely on donations and grants to harden our infrastructure as well as offset the costs of providing radios and communications equipment for the elderly, needy, and disadvantaged. CERA was founded to support and promote public service communications and to develop and promote the knowledge and advancement of radio operating techniques and the technical skills related to public service community and emergency radio communications. We accomplish these goals through mentoring new radio operators, participating in public safety exercises, and through emergency preparedness, education and goodwill.
