In the heart of the Aosta Valley, caressed by the second highest range of the Alps, the Val d’Ayas is a wide and luxuriant valley which rises up from Verrés following the waters of the Evançon torrent. In the summer, it is a true open air gym for day excursions of trekking, mountain biking, trail running, climbing, mountaineering, yoga and wellbeing as well as all the other outdoor activities which are open to you. In the winter, the Val d’Ayas becomes an international skiing base widening its horizons in hundreds of kilometres of slopes thanks to Monterosa Ski which provides the means for going up to the Monte Rosa glaciers at altitudes of over 3,200 metres before crossing the borders of the Aosta Valley Region into Piedmont. The Monte Rosa is the uncontaminated and wild pearl that dominates the horizon to the north of the Val d’Ayas at an altitude of 4,600 metres. It is a range of crests and peaks that give light and contrast to the pine forests and meadows below. Reinhold Messner was the first to point out the uniqueness since it is the only massif in the Alps where you feel like you are in the Himalayas. Yet, the Val d’Ayas isn’t just Monte Rosa, it is also bursting with life, towns, festivals, food and wine and culture. Called Kramer Thal on the old Valais merchant maps from 1500, the Val d’Ayas has a significant past such as being the commerce road between the Valais and the Padano Plain. In that period which is characterised by the settlement of the Walser population in the southern valleys of the Monte Rosa, it also stood out due to the local domination of the Challand family who built the medieval castles, all of which can be visited today.
