About CORESZON: A Community Resilience Network
CORESZON was initiated in 2017 at the University of Hamburg's Department of Child Psychiatry and Psychotherapy with a group of parents and young people with lived experience of flight and migration. Together, they developed a capacity building program that empowers non-professionals to deliver a community-based intervention that promotes caregiver and community wellbeing as key drivers behind healthy child development in the face of adversity. The "Garden Method for Community Wellbeing" is a skills-based group intervention that engages community members in a hands-on approach to promoting mental health. The imagery of gardening invites people to share and grow their knowledge about protective factors in their community by beginning with a question: "What do caring for wellbeing and caring for a garden have in common?". This leads to a common understanding of socioecological resilience and highlights what group members already know about promoting wellbeing. Groups work together to relate current ideas from neuroscience, developmental psychology and resilience research to their everyday experiences of stress and wellbeing. This is embedded in a series of activities in which Learners acquire body-based techniques that support individual and interpersonal stress regulation and wellbeing. The primary objective of the Garden Method is to promote caretaker and community wellbeing as a major protective factor for healthy child development, whilst identifying community-specific pathways to resilience and inspiring action to cultivate these in everyday life. Now a network of partners in Germany, Kenya, and Iraq, CORESZON thrives on shared expertise from diverse settings.
