Research done by scientists at the University of South Carolina reveals that burning petroleum-based paraffin candles does, in fact, release toxic chemicals. Studies found that smoke from paraffin candles emitted doses of pollutants, including benzene, toluene and ketones, which have been linked to cancer, asthma and birth defects. The same study found that candles made of vegetable-based wax, such as Country Life’s premium soybean wax, emitted no toxic chemicals in their tests.
