Cowboy Up Therapies is Houston’s one and only private practice for occupational and speech therapy services, providing animal assisted therapy and hippotherapy as one of many treatment modalities. We are located on a secluded and tranquil property in the greater Houston area. Our property includes a treatment facility where we provide evidence based treatment while incorporating animal assisted therapy (AAT) into our sessions. Our therapy is client focused and we strive to maximize potential in everyone we treat. We use trained therapy animals in our treatment to leverage the unique healing power of the human-animal bond into the treatment plan. AAT provides a novel and motivating experience for the client and research has shown AAT is an effective method for improving neurological function and attention. Hippotherapy refers to the use of the movement of the horse as a treatment modality by physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists to address impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities in patients with neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction. Hippotherapy provides highly organized motor and sensory input that is passed from the equine to the patient. The horse’s movement is rhythmic, consistent and sustained over time and promotes active responses in the patient. Hippotherapy is used as part of an integrated treatment program to achieve functional outcomes. Hippotherapy engages the patient in activities on the horse that are enjoyable and challenging. In the controlled hippotherapy environment, the therapist modifies the horse’s movement and carefully grades sensory input, establishing a foundation for improved neurologic function and sensory processing.
