About Crofting Commission

Our aim is to regulate crofting, to promote occupancy of crofts, active land use, and shared management by crofters, as a means of sustaining and enhancing rural communities. We Value: • Those we serve and each other •Clear, positive, measurable outcomes •Supportive team working •Positive change and continual improvement •Constant learning •Impartiality •Respect for difference and diversity •Openness and clarity The Crofting Commission also advises Scottish Government on crofting issues. Commissioners Commissioners work 4.5 days per month with a salary of £8,789 per annum. The Convener works 8 days per month with a salary of £20,763 per annum. Three Commissioners were appointed by Scottish Ministers and six Commissioners were elected by crofters. All are supported by the Commission's Chief Executive and Management. Commissioners sit as a Board to set policies and decide complex applications. Commissioners also participate on a number of internal policy working groups with senior Commission staff. These groups develop policy thinking and responses to partner organisations on consultations affecting the future of crofting. Commission Board meetings are usually held in public. This allows the Commissioners to meet crofters and others who wish to attend, as well as letting them see at first hand our decision making.
