When a child is ill, they want to have their family by their side. By providing accommodation for families of critically ill children in hospital, Crossbasket House keeps families close by when a child needs them most. Based on the campus of the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow, we provide a cost free ‘home from home’ for families during some of the most difficult times in their life, providing all the amenities possible for families with seriously ill children. This is their place to think, to cry, to rest and recuperate. Since 1996, (previously known as Yorkhill Family House) we have been privileged to have supported over 500 families a year – that’s over 12,000 families! - by providing free accommodation on the doorstep of the wards so that they can gain access to the specialist services the Glasgow hospital provides without the worry of where to rest their head and the costs associated with that. Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, we have 31 private en-suite bedrooms, a large garden and parking. Our large open plan kitchen/dining area and laundry room allows families to cook, eat and clean just as they would at home, we also have comfy lounges on each floor and a library to allow for relaxed quiet time. Crucially, every bedroom has a phone that is linked directly to the Ward, so parents can call or be called to the hospital at a moment’s notice, no matter what time of day or night. As an independent Scottish charity, we rely soley on fundraising to raise the £1m needed every year to keep our doors open and continue providing for as many families as possible.
