About CTtransit
CTtransit brand is ranked as New England’s second largest and Connecticut’s largest state-owned fixed-route bus system. Headquartered in Hartford, CT, with divisions in New Haven and Stamford, we have a team of 1,400 employees that continues to grow. Our fleet of 520 buses transport approximately 20 million riders annually within the CTtransit Hartford, New Haven, and Stamford markets, operating a network of nearly 100 local and 13 express bus routes. We provide service to more than 60 cities and towns in Connecticut and bordering state of New York. The Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Public Transportation (CTDOT) acquired CTtransit in 1976, transitioning the private ownership of the Colony Company, headed by E. Clayton Gengras, to public ownership. In Dec. 2022, CTDOT announced that RATP Dev USA was awarded a four-year contract for management of the Hartford, New Haven, and Stamford divisions of CTtransit, effective Jan. 1, 2023. CTtransit also operates in Waterbury, New Britain, Bristol, Meriden, and Wallingford as well as operations by other private companies under contract with the state. The partnership between the CTDOT and CTtransit continues to expand and improve the efficiencies of public transportation. In March 2015, CTfastrak opened a regional bus rapid transit system. The Hartford-New Britain Busway is built on current and former railroad rights-of-way owned by the state and Amtrak with service between downtown Hartford and the downtown New Britain station. CTtransit launched the e-Bus project in 2022. CTDOT strives to provide a reliable, safe, sustainable, clean energy transportation system for riders. Incorporating electric transit buses into its existing bus fleet transitions bus operations away from fossil fuels, reduces air pollution caused by diesel combustion and creates a brighter tomorrow for all of Connecticut’s residents.
