The world needs detection and diagnostics, vaccines and treatments delivered at speed and scale to control a pandemic. Our discovery research will advance the technologies and treatments we need to prepare for future pandemics and safeguard our future. Effective therapeutics are critical in a pandemic. When we have safe, affordable and effective therapeutics, we can treat people when they are sick and reduce the severity of disease. Our ambitious research program will accelerate the science behind therapeutics so they can be fast-tracked for us in the face of another pandemic. It will focus on: • Fundamental virology, bacteriology and immunology to identify new targets for treatment strategies • Platform technologies that can get new therapeutics into patients faster than traditional approaches • Innovative blue-sky research that will provide the foundation for more targeted research and practical applications. The establishment of the Cumming Global Centre for Pandemic Therapeutics was made possible by the exceptional generosity of international businessman and philanthropist, Mr Geoffrey Cumming, who donated $250 million to the University of Melbourne to set up it up within the Doherty Institute. The Victorian Government has also contributed significantly to the new world-leading centre, initially committing $75 million in recognition of the critical need to advance the science behind therapeutics.
