About Dalhousie Women in Engineering Society
The Dalhousie Women in Engineering (WIE) Society is an open society, welcoming students who share common goals and interests relating to the advancement of equality for women within the engineering industry in both academia and professional practice. Despite the contributions and achievements of women within the field, women are drastically under-represented within engineering due to gender stereotypes relating to many factors including required skills, required personal qualities, workplace conditions and their own sense of perceived success. The WIE Society aims to overcome the gender gap by giving all female students a platform to be heard, and a position of power within the university and the larger engineering community, thereby creating a female presence in all aspects of the engineering faculty’s activity. Members are also encouraged to harness their own potential by removing self-doubt and allowing them to engage in leadership and volunteer positions within the society. The society also helps current WIE students see through the completion of their studies by establishing a peer-support network, connecting mentors and providing opportunities for professional skill development. The society also dedicated to outreach programs for the local community, empowering girls, promoting the field of STEM to girls and providing them with mentor opportunities.
