Dandy Don’s HomeMade Ice Cream started in 1981 as a retail shop called The Creamery in Tarzana, CA. It soon became apparent to owners Linda and Don Whittemore that the real opportunities were in supplying super premium ice cream to Los Angeles area restaurants, hotels and country clubs. The Whittemores opened their manufacturing plant in Van Nuys and began creating over 100 varieties of ice cream—from classic vanilla bean to the more exotic like pink ginger and jalapeño grapefruit-- using only natural flavors, natural colors, the finest fresh fruits, nuts and high quality mix-ins, all made without preservatives. Dandy Don’s HomeMade Ice Cream boasts extremely low overrun and a rich 14-18 percent butterfat. Because the ice cream is so dense, a 3gal. tub weighs 18 lbs. and yields 72 four-ounce scoops making it a better value to operators and more profitable than most ice creams available to foodservice. Dandy Don’s takes pride in working with chefs, pastry chefs and F&B directors to provide a large selection of flavors, or to create custom flavors unique to their operation. Many of Los Angeles’ upscale restaurants are known for their signature desserts featuring Dandy Don’s HomeMade Ice Cream. Don Whittemore’s early career in promotion at both RCA & Capitol Records prepared him for the other component of Dandy Don’s—catering special events with ice cream sundaes. Dandy Don's Sundae Bar Catering brings the ice cream parlor experience - with pre-scooped ice cream in disposable cups, spoons & scores of gourmet toppings - to any size event from birthday parties with 25 guests to business events and movie premieres with thousands of attendees. On a regular basis, Dandy Don’s serves corporate events; for example, 800 sundaes for a mall opening to 3100 sundaes for a large property management firm.
