Daphne’s first fame was at the turn of the 20th century as a dance pavilion. This elegant open air structure was located just inside the confines of the present day Veterans Memorial State Park. The railroad had a hand in setting up the pavilion and ran excursions out to it from Cordele. People would pack a picnic basket, dress up in their Sunday whites, and go to Daphne for the whole day. Daphne Lodge now enjoys the fruit of many years of successful service. Having appeared in Southern Living as one of the top ten restaurants serving catfish and featured on the cover of their Sea and Stream cookbook, feature articles on Daphne Lodge continue to appear in major travel books, magazines, and newspapers. Under the sponsorship of the Georgia Hospitality and Tourism Association, Daphne Lodge was awarded a Governor’s Award for Excellence for being one of Georgia’s outstanding restaurants. Atlanta Magazine recognized Daphne Lodge as one of the “South’s favorite restaurants,” U.S.A.
