Fall injuries among older adults are a global public health crisis. Every year, millions of people fall, suffering life-changing consequences ranging from hip fractures to brain injuries to death. In 2023, more than 41,000 older adults died from falls in the U.S. A serious fall injury can change a person’s quality of life in an instant. Patients face expensive medical care, long-term rehab and a loss of independence. Many begin a path of physical decline. The SAF-T VEST™ solution Most strategies to reduce fall injuries focus on prevention. We took a different approach. Rather than preventing the fall, the SAF-T VEST (U.S. Patent #10,897,938 B2) anticipates it. This comfortable, lightweight garment monitors the user’s center of gravity. When motion sensors detect an unrecoverable fall in progress, a system of airbags inflates in less than a half second to reduce the risk and severity of injury. Fracture-prone areas like the head, neck, shoulders, elbows, and hips are protected. The airbags rapidly deflate to provide a cushioned landing. Our SAF-T VEST prototype, unveiled in December 2023, was tested on a life-sized mannequin in a forward and backwards fall. The device 1) detected the fall in real time; 2) inflated airbags in less than half a second; and 3) deflated the airbags to absorb the impact and provide a cushioned landing.
