About DAWTA
DAWTA CIC is a multi-media platform tackling marginalisation through creative practice. Work includes producing podcasts, music events and creating media content that builds communities. DAWTA CIC originates from Dionne Draper's 2019 semi-autobiographical one woman musical, 'DAWTA'. Dionne portrays the world of Sarah, a transracial adoptee born in the 1970's who is separated from her Jamaican mother at birth, and Sarah's quest to find home. In response to the 2020 pandemic 'DAWTA' had to pivot from building the isolated UK transracial adoptee and fostered adult community through live performances, to harnessing social media to connect nationally and internationally. In this time meaningful connections with ICAV (InterCountry Adoptee Voices) and AAM (Adult Adoptee Movement) and Lisa Marie-Simmons (writer, singer) and Nilaari (Bristol based Black and Asian Mental Health Charity) were established. And, in 2023 DAWTA The Podcast was born, supported by Arts Council England. DAWTA CIC was established in 2024 underpinned by the work of DAWTA The Podcast; an international platform that speaks about race, identity and belonging; building connection and empathy across communities.
