About Daykin Marshall Studio
Good places are a product of all those that use, design and make them and so our studio, based in south London, is part of a much larger family of collaborators. The places we make together feel settled, inevitable. They vary widely in scope and geography – from mid-rise mansions to rural estates, from family homes to urban masterplans – but all are connected with the history and character of the site, the desires of the client and the talents of their makers. Many are in sensitive or challenging contexts and, after a decade in practice, we have developed a specialism in this area. We describe Daykin Marshall Studio architecture as having a profound normality. It may not shout loud, but it runs deep, revealing – in quiet ways and over the longer term – the quality and care with which it was built. Founded in 2009 by Architects James Daykin and Mark Marshall, our portfolio includes houses, housing and public placemaking, with specialisms in unlocking complex or challenging sites, both urban and rural. We have developed extensive experience working in heritage and sensitive settings such as listed buildings, UNESCO sites and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Sustainable design is approached with a deep sense of commitment to longevity and material economy. Making robust buildings that minimise the energy consumed in their making and running, that will weather well and that will stand the test of time. Daykin Marshall Studio have been finalists in the Young Architect of the Year and recognised through various awards programmes, including the RIBA. We are appointed on a number of public sector frameworks over the UK. Our work has been published nationally and internationally, in both the architectural and mainstream press. James Daykin and Mark Marshall are visiting critics and tutors at a number of Schools of Architecture, including the Bartlett, Newcastle and Edinburgh Universities.
