THE CHALLENGE What does a 5,000 ton, or 10% reduction in Carbon emissions mean? Does the expression of progress described by a percentage, marks out of ten, or a vague reference to “not being on track”, create understanding as to what has been achieved, what needs to be done, and at what speed? Time and money are critical resources to enable more rapid progress and delivery, however of the two only one can be created at will. Time is a finite resource, yet we are failing to treat it with respect. Only by re-framing sustainability conversations, create greater clarity of purpose and urgency, can the collective efforts to protect environments, their natural species, and create more inclusive societies and economies be successful. Sir David Attenborough OUR APPROACH We assess organisational progress against targets, whether the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals or Net Zero 2050, by analysing performance trend data, and ignoring promises of action (and sentiment) to project attainment dates of delivery. Results are articulated as a date visual to remove complexity. It is simple to understand and respond to and aims to effect behavioural change by framing progress as to when our current behaviours, if continued, will deliver. We ignore promises because evidence shows that the “intention-action” gap is a common trait we all share, and after all people do change their promises for a variety of different reasons. Commitment, plans, and initiatives are essential in delivery, but best evaluated when complete rather than incorporated as part of an assessment. Simply put, delivery, and measurable data drives dates!
