About Delaware County Historical Society - Pennsylvania
Delaware County Historical Society (DCHS) was founded in 1895 with a mission to collect, protect, and preserve the history and culture of Delaware County, PA. Over our 130-year history, the DCHS collection has grown to hold some of the most unique and invaluable pieces that relate not only to Delaware County history, but to history at the national and international stage as well. The DCHS collection has documents relating to the founding of Pennsylvania, and items that are not found anywhere else in the world! The DCHS collection consists of deeds and documents signed by prominent figures such as William Penn, Declaration of Independence signer John Morton, General Anthony Wayne, and Thomas Leiper. With a collection that numbers in the thousands, items include the Lincoln Banner of 1860, portraits of local prominent families from such artists as Samuel Bell Waugh, Charles Alexander Stewart, Archibald Woodside, and of course Benjamin West, and thousands of newspapers, photographs, deeds, documents, maps, atlases, 3-D artifacts, manuscripts, and books. Each item has been carefully selected and vetted to ensure that their provenance is to Delaware County, and that each item tells a unique part of Delaware County history. DCHS has four essential pillars to our mission and each pillar is how we serve the community: Archives/Research: Providing the people of Delaware County with a reliable and accurate archive to house the historic treasures of Delaware County. -Education: Creating accessible avenues for k-12 and collegiate students to have equitable access to local history. -Collaboration: Working with like-minded institutions to provide accessible humanities and local history to the people of Delaware County. DCHS acts as a beacon for the local historic community. -Inclusivity & Accessibility: Curating programming that is reflective of all communities within Delaware County and ensuring that programming is accessible to all.
