About Dementia Research Community
The Dementia Research Community brings together dedicated people with a common goal – to raise awareness of dementia, and to fundraise to help find a cure. Originating with the Bondi2Berry Ride to Remember in 2016, we have raised over $1.7 million to help with research. We have witnessed first hand the effects of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Co-founder Pierre's mother was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and co-founder Nick's father was diagnosed in 2011. Nick's grandmother passed away after suffering with the disease for more than 10 years. The strain placed on family and close friends is debilitating in itself. Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia. It is a collection of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain, it is not one specific disease. There is no cure. Currently there are more than 350,000 Australians living with dementia. Without a major breakthrough in research, the figure is expected to soar to 900,000 by 2050.
