About Department of Energy - Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management (OREM) is tasked with removing deteriorated facilities and legacy waste dating back to the Manhattan Project and Cold War. That mission spans three sites on the Oak Ridge Reservation—the Y-12 National Security Complex, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and East Tennessee Technology Park. Our projects at these sites are removing risks and hazards, enhancing safety, opening land for re-development, and modernizing campuses to enable important science and energy research and national security missions. We’ve made significant progress, and future projects will continue this transformation. Cleanup at the East Tennessee Technology Park converted a shuttered uranium enrichment complex into a multi-use industrial park that’s attracting hundreds of millions of dollars in new investments to the region. Our portfolios at the Y-12 National Security Complex and Oak Ridge National Laboratory are eliminating old, contaminated buildings to clear away hazards and open land for expanding research and national security missions.
