About Des Moines Gay Men's Chorus
The Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus is more than a choral organization—it's a heartfelt dedication to supporting and promoting the LGBTQ+ community through the transformative medium of "music that matters." The chorus was founded by Dr. Randal A. Buikema in 2001, who also served as the Artistic Director until 2005. Artistic Director and Conductor Dr. Rebecca Gruber came to the DMGMC in 2006 and led the chorus until stepping down in 2020. Eric Shepard served as Artistic Director and Conductor from 2022 to 2024, continuing to build on the chorus’s legacy. DMGMC is a non-auditioned chorus made up of 80+ singers and welcomes all individuals, regardless of gender, who sing in the tenor and bass ranges. Within the organization, there are also two distinct small ensemble groups: HarMANY and Transcendent. HarMANY, formed in 2009, is an auditioned ensemble that celebrates the rich tapestry of voices within the LGBTQ+ community. This showcase group provides its members with unique opportunities to perform a repertoire that adds a special touch to the larger chorus's offerings. Additionally, Transcendent, another small ensemble under the DMGMC umbrella, offers an inclusive and safe space for transgender and non-binary-identifying singers. This group further contributes to the chorus's commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and musical expression for all members. As a community champion, DMGMC unites voices to act as a powerful force for change. Founded on the principles of promoting harmony, igniting hearts, and moving minds, DMGMC strives to provide a welcoming space for LGBTQ+ and ally members, where the shared love for music becomes a catalyst for meaningful connections. Through captivating performances and impactful outreach programs, the chorus aims to educate, inspire, and entertain audiences, contributing to broader acceptance and understanding for the LGBTQ+ community.
