About Diamond Educational Excellence Partnership (DEEP)
Diamond Educational Excellence Partnership (DEEP) empowers communities to create the conditions for children to be lifelong learners who lead choice-filled lives. In southeastern San Diego, only 32% of third graders in the Lincoln Cluster read at grade level—a stark contrast to the 53% district-wide average. This literacy gap represents more than statistics; it's a barrier to opportunity that follows children throughout their lives. Students who can't read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school, limiting their potential for higher education, meaningful careers, and economic mobility. DEEP tackles this crisis head-on through our integrated Theory of Change, which unites three evidence-based programs: Preparing for Kindergarten, Reading by Third Grade, and Learning Beyond the Classroom. We work simultaneously to support children before they enter school, during the school day, and after school hours, creating a comprehensive literacy ecosystem that empowers families, equips educators, and supports students. Our approach works. Over the past three years, third-grade reading proficiency in DEEP partner schools has increased from 28% to 34%—outpacing the broader Lincoln Cluster and demonstrating that the literacy gap is not insurmountable. We serve over 1,300 individuals annually across four elementary schools, with plans to expand to all 11 schools in the Lincoln Cluster within three years. Rooted in The Science of Reading and delivered through trusted community partnerships, DEEP's programs address systemic barriers while building on community strengths. We hire locally, remove barriers to participation, and ensure our work reflects the voices and experiences of the families we serve. The literacy crisis is solvable. With evidence-based strategies, community partnerships, and sustained investment, we can ensure every child in southeastern San Diego has the opportunity to succeed. Join us in closing the literacy gap.
