When considering one of the largest purchases or sales you make in your lifetime, experience is normally highly desired, but sadly in the state of Arizona, a person can know absolutely nothing about real estate, negotiations, contracts, data analysis, etc., and still be licensed and legally able to represent another person as an agent and practice real estate within 14 days of starting real estate licensing classes (90 hours of training total). To provide a different frame of reference for time needed to represent another person I will use the time required to become an attorney (most real estate transactions in the eastern part of the United States involve and/or require attorneys). In order to become an attorney in Arizona one would need a Bachelor’s degree (4 years of schooling) plus another 2-3 years of law school. This is quite a shift from a few weeks. Even if you just wanted to cut hair, the state of Arizona would require at least 1500 hours in order to be licensed. It is safe to say that having a person represent you who “just has a real estate license” does not necessarily mean they have the knowledge or experience to be your best choice of representation for potentially one of the biggest sales or purchases of your life.
