After 25+ years analyzing how businesses and processes flow in the corporate world, I want to focus on businesses in my own area of the Mountains of Western North Carolina. After the effects of Hurricane Helene I definitely knew HERE is where I want to make the biggest impact. So, with all of this experience in the corporate world, how can I translate that into what is needed for the local small and medium sized businesses here? I don't want to walk in with a bunch of corporate speak trying to convince an owner who has very little time in the day that they need ME to help create efficiency. That meant time. Time to realize everything I knew about process improvement and efficiency wasn't so different from the corporate to the local level. It did, however, need some tweaking. So I boiled everything to a simplistic strategy of 3 steps, all of course that expand further than just the buzzwords they are. Process - Leave my notebook at the table. Observe what is around me. Understand the flow. See where inventory is coming in, and how it is coming out as a finished product. If watching within a customer setting, what are they doing? What is their temperament? Repeat this process 3-4 times during the first week at different times and days to gain a bigger understanding. Write notes afterwards because I will forget. Optimize - With the knowledge gained, as well as any relevant data the owner can provide, I will spend the 2nd week compiling an initial report. The owner and I will by the end of the week. We'll review recommendations, with training starting week 3. By week 4 the new processes will be fully implemented, while I observe for any tweaks along the way. Liftoff - Now we engage for LIFTOFF! With scheduled calls with the owner over the next several months >> SUCCESS << is realized and I trust we and the team will be all be grateful for the accomplishments we've achieved!
