About Dominican Literacy Center
The Dominican Literacy Center serves the immigrant population in the Aurora, IL area, offering one-on-one ESL tutoring for women, as well as classes for men and women who are preparing to take the Naturalization test to become new U.S. citizens. The ESL program features an in-person "women-teaching-women" format, pairing each of our 150 students with her own volunteer tutor. The DLC offers a place to gather and grow in community and friendship, as well as the language acquisition and literacy tools to help students improve their lives and the lives of those around them. The ESL program currently serves students from over 20 different countries of origin. The Citizenship program offers classroom learning for men and women who are preparing to make their applications and take the Naturalization test to become new U.S. citizens. Students with approaching interview dates are also given individualized one-on-one volunteer tutoring over and above the classroom teaching. The program sees a high success rate of students passing their tests and celebrates dozens of new U.S. citizens every year.
