About Donella Meadows Institute

Formerly the Sustainability Institute, the Donella Meadows Institute was founded in 1996 by the late Donella (Dana) Meadows. We work to bring economic, social, and environmental systems into closer harmony by applying systems thinking and organizational learning to sustainability challenges. Designing and implementing sustainable strategies for global, regional, and local systems are urgent tasks, requiring our commitment and our capacity for learning, growth, and change. Today, we have the opportunity to create new ideas together and to develop them into practical forms that can influence our world tomorrow. Among the many sources of inspiration that drive our exploration of sustainable strategies, the life and work of the Institute’s founder, Donella Meadows, remains powerful. Donella warned us that it takes clarity and courage to challenge existing systems. She recognized that, along with analytical thinking, empirical evidence, systems thinking, and modeling, the creation of sustainable futures requires visioning, networking, and learning. She challenged us to combine analytical power with love and truth telling to develop solutions that will sustain and support human well-being and fulfillment as well as the resources that supply our practical needs.
