About Drumming for Your Life Institute

“The Drumming For Your Life Institute is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2002 dedicated to using the power of rhythm to help children and youth develop the emotional, academic, and social skills needed to succeed in school and in life.” Children who are not successfully taught reading skills become adults who are functionally illiterate. Young adults who cannot read have limited earning options with poverty or crime as a common result. For these unfortunate individuals, and for the rest of society, these are costly alternatives. In either case, our taxes will be used to provide for them through welfare or another costly result--jail. The Drumming for Your Life Institute offers an inexpensive alternative with a far better outcome. Our Reading & Rhythm program inspires students to read by using innovative techniques, to create greater focus, and build self-esteem. Rather than sticking to the old ways of teaching reading, we teach students to trust their intelligence, their creativity and their own natural ability to grasp ideas and facts by the revolutionary use of rhythm which converts the fear of failure into the will to fight to learn. Description The Institute's goal, under the leadership of founder Steven Angel, is to bring the benefits of drumming to schools, juvenile justice facilities, cancer and addiction rehabilitation centers. Steven created the Reading and Rhythm Program as a powerful strategy to address the needs of struggling readers. The universal appeal of rhythm makes Reading and Rhythm stand out from other reading strategies. The Reading and Rhythm program connects the fight response in the amygdala part of the brain to the intellect of the frontal cortex.
