About Durham Climbing Centre
Established in 2007 by CEO Hayley McKenna, Durham Climbing Centre is one of the longest standing, dedicated bouldering centre's in the UK. Durham Climbing Centre are proud to offer a welcoming climbing community and facilities for every level of climber. The extensive purpose built facilities offer something for everyone from beginner to advanced climbers of all ages and all abilities. High quality coaching and facilities for adults’ children attracts a variety of centre users, from individuals to schools and groups. In 2020, Durham Climbing Centre underwent its biggest ever refurbishment to date with significant reinvestment. The entire centre benefited from full decoration and repaint, full reset of over 200 new climbing problems on all climbing surfaces, full revamp of the advanced training areas, full reset of beginner climbing areas, new café layout to incorporate socially distant seating areas and a brand new easy to use online booking system. To complete the refurbishment, the company invested in new climbing holds from industry leaders and incorporated Olympic style route setting offering an exciting new climbing experience for beginner and experienced climbers. Participation in indoor climbing is growing rapidly by those seeking an alternative to the gym for physical fitness and mental wellbeing. Climbing is a sport that can be enjoyed by all ages from age 2 up to climbers of any age. Climbing is popular with children, with parents realising the physical and social benefits from a young age. The inclusion of climbing for the first time at Olympics 2020 seals its pathway for the future. In 2020 there were close to one million people climbing independently indoors each year. Indoor climbing is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK; indoor climbing is growing at 15-20% growth per annum and is a new Olympic Sport for 2021. (Association of British Climbing Walls)
