About East Baton Rouge Parish Juvenile Court
East Baton Rouge Parish Juvenile Court was created in 1990 by Act 158. Pursuant to Louisiana Revised Statutes 13:1621, Juvenile Court has original jurisdiction over proceedings in the interest of children under seventeen years of age in East Baton Rouge Parish. Accordingly, Juvenile Court has original jurisdiction over the following proceedings in East Baton Rouge Parish: Juvenile Delinquency; Child in Need of Care (CINC); Families In Need of Services (FINS); Juvenile Traffic; Mental Health Proceedings regarding children in State custody confined to mental institutions; Adoptions; Voluntary Transfer of Custody; Voluntary Termination of Parental Rights; and Involuntary Termination of Parental Rights (TPR). East Baton Rouge Parish Juvenile Court is one of only four special Juvenile Courts created by law in the State of Louisiana that exercise exclusive original juvenile jurisdiction, and any other jurisdiction conferred by the statute creating them, in the parish or parishes for which they are created. The other three special Juvenile Courts are in Caddo, Orleans and Jefferson Parishes. Judges of these courts shall exercise their juvenile jurisdiction according to the provisions of the Louisiana Children's Code. The mission of East Baton Rouge Parish Juvenile Court is as follows: (1)To interpret and enforce the Louisiana Children's Code and other statutes in a manner that ensures due process, fair treatment and justice to juveniles, parents, families, and other persons appearing before the Juvenile Court. (2)To ensure that juveniles receive the care, guidance, protective services, supervision and control conducive to the needs of the child and the best interest of the community. (3) To improve the efficiency of the Court's services in order to provide effective and timely judicial response to the needs of juveniles and families.
