About East Boldre Community Stores Limited
East Boldre Community Stores Limited is a community benefit society (non-profit social enterprise) based in East Boldre, within the New Forest National Park. With our village shop due to close this year when the owner retires we have bought the village's former Baptist chapel as premises for our community owned and run business to safeguard these vital services for local residents. The chapel is currently undergoing an extensive programme of repairs to address the severe damp, dry rot, woodworm, asbestos and drainage issues. We will also carry our minor alterations to suit our uses and create off road parking for customers. The former vestry will provide a vibrant community space for shop events, local groups, home working etc. In partnership with St Barbe Museum, it will provide a venue for their touring exhibitions bringing arts, culture and heritage to local people's doorsteps. The chapel was East Boldre's first church, built, extended and maintained by generations of local people so is part of the social history of East Boldre. By running our financially sustainable business within it we also ensure the chapel's continued community ownership and use. We are researching the chapel's history to produce an exhibition in the vestry along with interpretation of the site to commemorate and celebrate its history at this point where its role in the community changes.
