About East Harlem Council for Human Services

Since 1965, the East Harlem Council for Human Services, Inc. (EHCHS) has provided the highest quality, fully bilingual health and human services to East Harlem and the surrounding community. Since our inception we have focused on the needs of our community. In 1969 we established one of NYC's first fully bilingual head start programs and then in 1974 we created the Boriken Neighborhood Health Center (Boriken) to address the tremendous health-related needs of El Barrio. Our mission is “To offer high quality, comprehensive community-based, fully bilingual health, and human services to the residents of East Harlem, and reflect the socio-cultural fabric of El Barrio.” We offer this regardless of an individual patient's ability to pay, immigration status or any other factor. We are committed to addressing the health disparities and inequities experienced by the residents of the communities we serve and mitigating the social drivers of health. East Harlem's 127,750 residents experience the highest rates of asthma in the nation. The incidences of HIV/AIDS, diabetes and heart disease are among the highest in the country. Fifty-two percent of East Harlem residents are Latino, 36% are African American, 7% are Caucasian, and 2% are persons of other races/ethnicities. Thirty-seven percent of the residents in EHCHS's service area live below the poverty level; only 40 percent live above 200 percent of the poverty line. The fully bilingual and culturally competent services which Boriken provides to this vibrantly diverse community are a vital resource for East Harlem’s most vulnerable residents. Boriken’s services include: pediatrics, adolescent health, adult medicine, asthma education and support services, comprehensive HIV-related education and outreach, counseling and testing, dental, oral surgery, family medicine, geriatrics, prenatal and gynecology, cardiology, optometry, nutrition, onsite laboratory, pharmacy, podiatry, behavioral health and transportation.
