About eduflex1-inc
As a dedicated reading specialist with over 25 years of experience working with struggling readers, I am deeply concerned by the state of literacy in our nation. The U.S. adult literacy rate stands at 79%, lagging behind countries like Russia (99.93%) and China (99.83%). Even more troubling, 40% of students nationwide cannot read at a basic level, with 70% of low-income fourth graders falling below this benchmark. This issue is personal to me—I’ve spent years helping students who are two to three years behind in reading, often in under-resourced schools. Effective programs exist that can close these gaps, but they require commitment and support. Motivated to take action, I volunteered with Camp Crowne Heights, an after-school program serving K-6 students in a low-income area affected by crime and poverty. Without intervention, many of these children are at risk of dropping out of high school—a path that often correlates with criminal behavior. At Camp Crowne Heights, 28 of the 40 enrolled students are reading two to three years below grade level. Originally, I planned to tutor two students, but I couldn’t overlook the other 26 who also needed help. Realizing the urgent need for a larger effort, I started a nonprofit to secure funding and recruit college interns to work with more students, helping them achieve the crucial fourth grade reading benchmark. Your contribution can make a significant difference in helping these children succeed in school and beyond. Mark Hopper, Ph.D., ACSW
