Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in countries where democracy is in decline. Authoritarianism, shrinking civic space, and polarization not only erode institutions, they also roll back women’s rights. Wherever democracy weakens, gender equality is among the first casualties. The European Initiative for Gender Inclusive Democracy (EIGID) was created in response to this challenge. We counter the democratic backlash by embedding gender perspectives at every level of governance, from civic education to policy, from institutions to workplaces. Our work spans four areas: Civic Empowerment: training women, youth, and communities to participate fully in democratic life. Institutional Engagement: supporting governments and institutions to integrate gender into policy and service delivery. Workplace Culture: guiding companies through gender-responsive audits and trainings to make workplaces more inclusive and democratic. Awareness & Advocacy: influencing international agendas and fostering public dialogue on the nexus between gender and democracy. Our vision is clear: democracy is only complete when it guarantees equal participation for all. By making gender equality a standard measure of democratic health, EIGID works to build democracies that are more resilient, inclusive, and fair.
