About Elementary Institute of Science

The Elementary Institute of Science (EIS) is an afterschool science enrichment center dedicated to igniting the young minds of San Diego County and addressing the widening gap of underrepresented students in science. With laboratory experiences at the heart of its programs, EIS provides maximum exposure to all scientific fields in an interactive, inquiry-based environment that hones students’ analytical and critical thinking skills naturally. Through carefully constructed lesson plans and its signature hands-on, problem-solving activities, EIS challenges children to master a wide array of specialized, complex STEM-based courses. EIS continually seeks new ways to create an inspired, engaged community of motivated students who understand science theory and practical applications. EIS was started in 1964 as an after school club held in the back of an elementary school classroom in Southeast San Diego. EIS became an after-school and weekend science enrichment program for children ages 7-13. The program grew and partnered with other local schools, universities, and businesses to provide instructors and equipment. In 2003 EIS opened the door to its current two story 15,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that now stands out as a beacon of education and the ideal environment for children to learn about science and technology. The facility is equipped with five science labs, two computer science labs, a photography lab, lecture theatre, and conference room.
