“EllinikoTheatro invites Greek citizens and the citizens of the world to a continuous dialogue. It offers us an opportunity to listen to each other, all of us who believe we know everything. Just like Socrates said: in order to learn, one has to admit to knowing nothing“. Kathimerini Daily EllinikoTheatro is an international performing arts organization based in New York and Athens. Since its inception in 1979, it has sought to bring classical, medieval and contemporary Greek literature and drama to theatres, festivals, schools, universities and communities around the world. Minimal sets and casts, and bi-lingual productions—often enhanced by surtitles in several languages—, along with post-performance discussions and seminars, render the work globally accessible and attractive to a wide range of hosts, audiences and sponsors. In collaboration now with the celebrated Polyplanity Productions in Athens, «the most accomplished theatre of the Greek Diaspora» (Melina Mercouri) aims to develop into an innovative carrier of cultural diplomacy, expanding the temporal, spatial and social boundaries of Hellenic Theatre. During the last year, we have visited 15 cities in 6 countries, presenting Socrates Now, Cavafy – Poet of the City, Makriyannis’ Memoirs and Homer’s The Iliad, in theatres and festivals in Sweden, Belgium, New Zealand, Australia, USA and Greece! We have also held seminars, workshops and master-classes on performance, ethics and political theory in the schools and universities of Harvard, Nortwestern, Cornell, University of Sydney, Unitec in Auckland NZ, and the American Classical Studies at Athens, among many others!
