The European Law Students' Association (ELSA) is the largest independent law students' association in the world. It is a non-political and non-profit-making organisation run by and for students. ELSA is comprised of students and recent graduates who are interested in achieving academic and personal excellence beyond their university studies. As the world's biggest of its kind, it offers law students and young lawyers the opportunity to be active and to educate themselves beyond the classic university curriculum. Mutual understanding of European cultures and people, the education of lawyers with social and intercultural competence and the participation in academic programmes with practical relevance to the professional world are the keystones of ELSA. ELSA has become a valuable addition to numerous universities’ academic curriculum through a variety of legal activities, all of which have the aim of encouraging students to become internationally minded and professionally skilled. In addition, ELSA offers a unique opportunity to bridge legal theory into practice and develop the skills required to be successful in the legal profession. Through international activities, ELSA brings together law students from all over Europe and acts as a platform for international dialogue and cultural exchange. With over 60,000 members at more than 400 universities in 43 countries, ELSA can take advantage of a strongly connected, vital Europe-wide network. ELSA Edinburgh is a local branch of ELSA UK and provides law students in Edinburgh professional and academic opportunities, while building an international network.
