Vertical Farming is the practice of growing crops in stacked layers, in soil-free specially designed beds and trays, making use of artificial lighting and climate control to get the desired results during the growing process. With the four elements all controlled – lighting, irrigation, fermentation and climate, our commercial farm will be optimized for year-round production, no matter the season or Irish weather, and we expect to grow many different varieties of herbs, leafy greens, micro-greens and much more. This is one of the fastest-growing food sectors worldwide and was worth £1.72bn in 2018, with experts predicting that will rise to £9.84bn by 2026. Japan and the US are leading the way, but other countries are catching on, including Ireland and the UK. Enthusiasts say that vertical farming offers a means of guaranteeing yields and reducing the industry’s environmental impact, while improving the supply of safe, healthy and nutritious food and minimising the miles involved in its distribution. Our vision is to produce locally grown, quick-to-market herbs and micro-greens, produced in the country where it is consumed, with the traceability and integrity that food supply chains demand. Our farm in Ballyporeen, Co. Tipperary is at full production and later this month we are injecting further investment in the infrastructure, to increase our volumes and fulfill demand to our ever-growing database of customers.
