About Emergent Justice, a project of Tides Advocacy

Emergent Justice, a project of Tides Advocacy, is dedicated to unapologetically fighting to dismantle all systems of injustice throughout Michigan. This Black women-led organization works to empower justice impacted people, traumatized by racial injustice, to create a culture of unity, hope and resilience. As such they emphasize hiring directly impacted people who can use their life experience and strengths to change the narrative and create positive change. Emergent Justice has brought Participatory Defense to Michigan. It is a community driven pre-trial justice approach to help people better navigate the criminal justice system. It is not legal advice and is not a substitute for the individual’s attorney. It works with individuals who have been charged with crimes and their families to navigate their way through the criminal justice system and helps people better understand the process and take constructive action at each phase. In addition to Participatory Defense, we are involved in efforts to end the school to prison pipeline and enhance reproductive justice work that addresses abuse against women and girls who are or have been incarcerated.
