If not the co-inventor of the Energy Audit, I pioneered data gathering and site-inspection techniques and protocols in the 1970's. I was lucky enough to have a contact in President Carter's cabinet and was able to influence some of the decision-making that resulted in RCS, the residential energy conservation legislation that brought low-cost energy audits to millions of houses across the country. I built simple spreadsheet software to speed up the process and make savings calculations more accurate, as soon as PC's started showing up. I kept inspecting and fine-tuning my procedures and software, not falling into the building simulation trap that most of my smart associates preferred and have clung to for almost 3 decades. Today I am able to inject a whole dose of reality and consumer-friendly, investment-quality calculations into any software or scale program so every precious efficiency dollar can be well spent. Lots of people are joining the fight for energy truth, correcting upgrade and recommissioning programs for utility, sustainability, and data-driven underlying assumptions, algorithms, and formulas.
