About Engineers Alliance for the Arts
Engineers Alliance for the Arts was founded in 1999 by a group of leading San Francisco Bay Area structural engineers whose vision was to introduce high school students to the engineering profession and make them more aware of the connection between engineering and art. Students are taught structural engineering concepts through a collaborative, project-based approach -- literally the construction of a viable model bridge -- with an emphasis on aesthetics, creativity, team work and effective communication. This core project is called EAA’s Student Impact Project. During the past decade, EAA has witnessed decreased art and science programs in our Bay Area partner schools. EAA's main goals are to fill the educational gap that state budget and resource cuts have widened and to expose as many students as possible to engineering and inspire them to continue its exploration in college. On average, EAA's program accomodates 150 students each year with it's 10-week program. The project’s teaching staff is comprised of professional structural engineers who are leaders in our Bay Area community. Annually, EAA enlists 35-40 volunteer engineers to work with students. In addition, EAA engineer/teacher/mentors contribute over $100,000 in client billable hours to EAA’s Student Impact Project.
