Engineers Without Borders - Howard University (EWB-HU) Student Chapter is a student-led organization dedicated to leveraging engineering skills for community development both locally and globally. Our mission is to engage Howard University’s diverse engineering talent in meaningful projects that serve communities in need. We focus on sustainability within the D.C. area by organizing hands-on service events, such as community garden renovations, creek cleanups, and environmental sustainability efforts. These events not only contribute to the local community but also provide valuable mentorship opportunities for students interested in STEM. Our major international initiative is based in Nyanza, Kenya, where we are partnering with the Kogwari community to address their water challenges. The community currently struggles with sourcing, storing, sanitizing, and distributing clean water. Our goal is to provide a sustainable water solution that meets their needs and can be maintained by the community in the long term. The project begins with an assessment trip, where we’ll meet with local leaders, educate the community on water sanitization, and assess the water-related issues. After gathering data, we’ll design a customized solution that is both practical and sustainable. The next step will be the implementation phase, where we return to Nyanza to begin construction and support the community in the creation of a lasting infrastructure. Through both local and international projects, EWB-HU is committed to creating sustainable solutions, fostering mentorship in STEM, and empowering students to make a positive impact in the world.
