About Equine Assisted Therapy Alaska

Equine Assisted Therapy Alaska, LLC (EATA) was founded in 1983 and incorporated in 2001. EATA's program is committed to the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International's (PATH, Intl.) model for excellence in equine-assisted activities and therapies. Our entire mission is dedicated to bringing the benefits of quality therapeutic horseback riding to children, adults, and veterans living with disabilities in the Anchorage area. The benefits of horseback riding are as numerous as the types of disabilities and conditions served. Research shows that individuals who participate in therapeutic riding experience physical, emotional, cognitive, and intellectual benefits. The most rewarding benefit for the riders, who are unable to walk, is to assist in giving them the confidence, control, and experience of walking, running, and playing sports on a horse. Once they are on the horse, the horses’ legs become their own. During sessions, clients to learn ride, steer the horse on their own, play games (therapy), go on trail rides, and groom the horses. The horse's gait provides a unique opportunity to physical therapists to work with clients diagnosed with lower-limb and spinal cord disorders in a non-clinical setting. This therapy, Hippo-therapy, mimics an individual's natural gait, allowing the client to exercise the legs, back, and spinal cord in a natural and gentle manner. Licensed Hippo-therapists work individually with each client, along with our certified riding instructor(s), and a team of volunteers. Therapeutic horseback riding encourages riders to focus on their abilities rather than their limitations and that’s the heart of EATA. We are fortunate to operate out of the William Clark Chamberlin Equestrian Center, located off Abbott, before Elmore. We operate from mid-June to mid-August. Our hours are Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
