About Española Humane
Española Humane, affectionately known as the “Little Shelter That Could,” is a beacon of compassion and a driving force behind lifesaving initiatives. Our mission is to improve the lives of animals in underserved communities. Simply stated, we go where the need is greatest. And we’re here, without judgment, when surrendering a pet has become the only option because we are an open-admissions shelter. In 2024, the shelter cared for over 4,000 homeless pets, and our clinic performed more than 7,100 free spay/neuter surgeries, more than any other shelter in New Mexico. Through our innovative programs like Paws in the Pen—where incarcerated individuals train shelter dogs for adoption—and a robust transport network sending over 1,000 pets to homes across the country, Española Humane’s impact reaches far beyond its walls. With a dedicated team of staff, fosters, and 625 volunteers, the shelter also extends its services into the community, offering free vaccines, spay/neuter, and health care initiatives, along with animal welfare education. Our Pet Amigos community outreach team goes door to door in targeted communities to help keep pets in homes by offering supplies, food, and veterinary care, as well as providing trap/neuter/return (TNR) to community cats. Fueled by the generosity of donors and partners, Española Humane continues to be a beacon of hope, proving that a small shelter with a big heart can change countless lives. Española Humane is a 501(c)3 non-profit.
