About Estonian Lawyers Union
The Estonian Lawyers' Union was founded in 1989. The union operates on a voluntary basis. Being a non-governmental organisation, the Union brings together legal specialists (lawyers, judges, prosecutors, attorneys, legal advisers, bailiffs, notaries, etc.) across Estonia. Today, the Estonian Lawyers' Union has nearly 500 members. The union's activities are managed daily by its director. The board of the union has three members (presidents) who are being elected for a three years term - the executive president, attorney-at-law Meelis Pirn, attorney Katarina Talumäe, and Rait Sannik, senior adviser to the Chancellor of Justice of Estonia. The current presidency has set itself the goal of growing the Union's membership, raising the Union's reputation and professional image, implementing cooperation projects with various organizations, greater participation in law-making processes and the overall development of the Union. Several sub-associations also operate in the Estonian Lawyers' Union - for example, the Association of Company Lawyers, the Association of Administrative Lawyers, the Association of European Law and the Association of Women Lawyers contribute specifically to the Estonian legal space. The association of company lawyers also belongs to the umbrella organisation - European Company Lawyers Association (ECLA). In addition to that, law students belonging to the Union gather in the Association of Junior Lawyers. The Estonian Lawyers' Union also issues the "Doer of the Year" nomination, which is awarded to a person who has contributed significantly to the activities of the Union during the past calendar year. The Estonian Lawyers' Union offers its members various activities, learning activities and participates actively in law-making. At the same time, through the Estonian Lawyers' Union, legal aid is offered free of charge to low-income persons in cooperation with local governments and the Estonian Unemployment Insurance Fund.
