About Extra Mile Pediatrics

Extra Mile Pediatrics is a nonprofit organization that repeatedly provides healthcare to children in communities in Central America where families have difficulty accessing even the most basic care. We believe that in order to truly lift a community, it's important to start at the base and build a healthier, more resilient community over time. This requires that healthcare and resources are not just directed at those that are sick. This requires seeing all children and addressing fundamental health issues such as growth, nutrition, development, education, preventive care, and chronic care management. We also believe that addressing those issues requires a long-term relationship with patients, and a commitment and investment to each individual community. Our model is to send teams of both medical and non-medical volunteers to the same locations within communities at least once every six months so that we can see the same children and families, work with the same community leaders, and really get to know the specific health and health infrastructure challenges in each community.
