About Facial Palsy
Facial Palsy South Africa is a clinical initiative dedicated to the rehabilitation, education, and advocacy of individuals affected by facial nerve disorders. We support people living with facial paralysis and work closely with healthcare professionals to deliver coordinated, patient-centred care. We have a special interest in conditions such as Bell’s palsy, Ramsay Hunt syndrome, trauma-related and post-surgical facial palsy, tumour-related paralysis, congenital facial palsy, hemifacial spasm, synkinesis, and other neurogenic or movement-based facial disorders. We also support patients with voice, swallowing, and speech difficulties related to facial nerve involvement. Our services include facial assessment, neuromuscular retraining, synkinesis management, patient education, and access to online and in-person therapy. We consult in Cape Town (Bellville, Brackenfell, Sunningdale) and offer online sessions to patients across South Africa and internationally. We actively partner with ENTs, neurologists, GPs, ophthalmologists, plastic surgeons, speech therapists, and allied professionals to ensure each patient’s care is holistic, evidence-informed, and aligned across disciplines. Facial Palsy SA was founded by Carianne Vermeulen, a certified facial therapist with over 20 years of clinical experience. Her advanced training includes international certifications in facial therapy and neuromuscular retraining, with hands-on experience at leading global facial nerve clinics. We exist to restore movement, rebuild confidence, and reshape how facial nerve care is delivered across the country.
