About Family Promise of Jacksonville
Using a blend of social services, hundreds of volunteers, and underutilized buildings in the community, Family Promise of Jacksonville offers hope to homeless families that their circumstances can be changed and their futures have the promise of a better life for their children. 85% of the families return to self-sufficiency and do not re-enter the emergency shelter network. Family Promise partners with 17 local multi denominational congregations and 800 volunteers to help homeless families move to their own homes and become self-sufficient. What makes Family Promise unique is that it collaborates with host churches and community services to capitalize on underutilized resources within the community to maximize results. Family Promise keeps families together always with no separation based on age or gender. Family Promise can accommodate single fathers with children. It also keeps sons over age 13 with their mother. Many shelters house teenage boys separately from women and younger children even if they are a family. • We can serve single mothers, single fathers, two parent families and grandparents raising grandchildren. One critical difference from other shelters is we keep families together always. They sleep in the same room, and eat meals together. • One unique aspect about the church rotation is that it gives families contact with the world outside of the shelter environment. Many of families gain job leads from church volunteers. • We are using under utilized community resources, church spaces that are empty during the week, to create space for social services.
